What the Raven Stole in Kinnaur

A Kinnauri tale says a raven once stole not grain or silver, but the village's impatience, and hid it high above the orchards where only winter could return it in pieces.

The village had grown fast-tempered, they say. Men interrupted elders, children snapped at chores, and even the trees seemed to fruit too early. One morning a raven circled low, called once, and flew off with the impatience of the whole settlement tucked invisibly beneath its wing.

Without impatience, the village moved more slowly and therefore more wisely. By the time winter came, the raven dropped the impatience back in shards across the ridges. Since then, old tellers say, Kinnaur has known that haste always returns, but a good village learns how to break it before it reaches the house.
