The flight from Delhi takes one hour. Day 2 — Leh. Monasteries, palace, bazaar.
Leh was a Silk Route trading post long before it was a travel destination. This history shows at every corner. The palace above the old town was built before the Taj Mahal. The Hall of Fame holds the region's military history in photographs that explain the geopolitical weight of this border landscape. Pathar Sahib Gurudwara sits beside the Leh-Manali highway in a location that feels improbable until you learn why it was placed there. The day moves through these sites at a measured pace — Shanti Stupa first for the morning light and the full panorama of Leh below, then the Indus-Zanskar confluence at Sangam, where two rivers of different colours meet at the same point and do not immediately mix. Day 3 — Khardung La. The sand dunes wait on the other side.
Leave Leh by 7am. The road climbs immediately through switchbacks that gain altitude faster than your lungs can adjust. Khardung La sits at 5,359m — higher than most summits in Europe. At the top, the air is thin, the sky is dark blue even at midday, and prayer flags snap hard in the constant wind. Stop briefly, take a photograph, and get back into the vehicle. The pass is for crossing, not lingering. The descent into Nubra Valley is one of those Himalayan transitions that takes a few minutes to register. Behind you: rock, altitude, army checkposts. In front of you: sand dunes. The Shyok and Nubra rivers have deposited sediment in this valley for thousands of years, and the result looks like the Sahara placed beneath eight-thousand-metre peaks. Diskit Monastery sits on a ridge above the valley, watching all of it. Turtuk Village Excursion | Northernmost Village of India
Until 1971, Turtuk belonged to Pakistan. It was ceded after the Bangladesh War, and the village still carries the memory of that boundary in its language, its architecture, and the way its people speak about the ridge that separates them from Baltistan. Drive from Hunder along the Shyok River — the road follows the water through canyon walls, past army convoys, through open stretches where the mountains feel too close to be real. Turtuk village arrives in stone pathways, wooden balconies, terraced apricot orchards, and the sound of irrigation channels. Walk slowly through the lanes. The residents here receive far fewer visitors than Leh or Nubra, and that restraint is worth matching. Continue to Thang, the last Indian civilian settlement before the Line of Control. Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso via Shyok River Route
The road from Nubra to Pangong via the Shyok route is a long day with no particularly famous stops — just the valley, the river, the cliffs, and eventually the lake. The approach matters. Pangong Tso does not reveal itself gradually. There is a moment, around a bend, when the blue simply begins. The lake is 134 kilometres long. Two thirds of it lies in China. Your side changes colour through the day — turquoise in the morning, deep blue at midday, silver-grey near sunset — because the light at 4,350m has a quality that doesn't exist anywhere lower. There are no trees, very little shelter from the wind, and the camps sit right at the water's edge. Arrive by afternoon. Keep the evening for the lake, nothing else. Pangong Tso to Leh via Chang La Pass
The sunrise at Pangong begins before the sun clears the peaks. The eastern sky brightens from below the ridgeline, and the lake turns colours that photographs will not fully reproduce. If you are awake at 5:30am — which the altitude and cold air often ensure — this is a free and completely unrepeatable thing. Leave Pangong after breakfast and climb toward Chang La at 5,360m. The pass is windier and colder than Khardung La because it faces east into the open Changthang plateau. Beyond it, the road descends toward the Indus Valley and Leh — familiar now, after days of high-altitude cold desert and borderland roads. The descent from Chang La back into the Indus Valley feels like returning to a city, even though Leh is a town of fewer than 30,000 people. If time and interest allow, the Druk White Lotus School is worth a brief stop on the way in. Return to Leh by afternoon. The last evening belongs to the market, a good dinner, and rest.
