Ladakh Beyond the Map

A complete international-friendly Ladakh circuit covering Zanskar, Changthang and Nubra with Delhi arrival support, Manali acclimatisation, high-pass drives and remote villages.

This proposed international guest route is designed for travellers who want to experience Ladakh properly instead of rushing only the famous points. The journey begins gently in Delhi, moves by overnight Volvo to Manali for acclimatisation, then crosses into Zanskar through Shinku La and Gombo Rangjon before reaching Padum and the spectacular Zanskar canyon roads to Leh. From Leh, the route turns east into the high nomadic world of Changthang: Tso Moriri, Hanle, open plateau country, remote villages and dark skies. It then continues to Pangong Lake, crosses toward Nubra Valley, and returns to Leh before the final departure day. In one well-paced journey, guests cover the three major Himalayan regions that define deeper Ladakh travel: Zanskar, Changthang and Nubra. It is still a mountain expedition with a few long driving days, but the pacing and acclimatisation days make it much more suitable for international travellers flying into India.

  1. Day 0 — Delhi. The entry point.

Arrive in Delhi and keep the first day simple. The team receives you at the airport, transfers you to your hotel and helps you settle after the international flight. The goal is recovery, hydration, SIM or currency basics if needed, and a calm first evening before the Himalayan route begins. Route Delhi Airport to Delhi hotel. Elevation Delhi ~216 m. Stay Delhi. Jio and Airtel postpaid signal available. Most stays have WiFi.

Stay: Delhi hotel as per selected tier

Meals: Not included / based on arrival timing

  2. Day 1 — Delhi. The capital and its chaos.

Ease into India with a flexible Delhi day. Explore selected old and new city pockets by auto rickshaw, with time for markets, street-life photography, heritage stops and local food depending on guest comfort. The day stays deliberately light so travellers can rest before moving into the mountains. Route Delhi local. Elevation Delhi ~216 m. Stay Delhi. Jio and Airtel postpaid signal available. Most stays have WiFi.

Stay: Delhi hotel as per selected tier

    Meals: Breakfast

  3. Day 2 — The overnight run to the mountains.

Spend the day at an easy pace in Delhi before boarding the overnight Volvo to Manali as per the final bus schedule. For international guests, think of ISBT Kashmere Gate as Delhi's large intercity bus terminal area; many search apps also spell it as Kashmiri Gate. The team shares the final Zingbus/operator counter, bus number, stand location, reporting time and ticket screenshot before departure. Please reach 45 minutes early with passport/ID, phone and WhatsApp active, then match the operator name, bus number, seat and Manali destination before boarding. This is the transition from the plains into the lower Himalayas. Route Delhi to Manali by overnight Volvo. Elevation Delhi ~216 m to Manali ~2,050 m. Stay Overnight Volvo. Network works throughout Delhi and the Himalayan foothills on the overnight drive. Download offline maps and content before boarding.

    Stay: Overnight Volvo

    Meals: Breakfast

  4. Day 3 — Manali. Slow down before the altitude.

Arrive in Manali and transfer to the hotel. This day is protected for rest, showers, light walks, cafes and acclimatisation before the expedition climbs towards Lahaul and Zanskar. Guests can explore Old Manali or Mall Road gently, but the pace remains slow. Route Manali Volvo drop to Manali hotel. Elevation Manali ~2,050 m. Stay Manali. Jio and Airtel postpaid signal available. Most stays have WiFi.

Stay: Manali hotel / resort as per selected tier

  5. Day 4 — Shinku La at 5,091m. Then Purne.

The expedition road begins properly as you cross Atal Tunnel into Lahaul, continue through Keylong, Jispa and Darcha, then climb toward Shinku La. From the pass, the landscape opens into Zanskar's raw mountain world with a stop around Gombo Rangjon before reaching Purne by evening. This is one of the route's long and spectacular mountain days. Route Manali -> Atal Tunnel -> Jispa -> Shinku La -> Gombo Rangjon -> Purne. Elevation Shinku La ~5,090 m. Stay Purne. Network unavailable at the pass and on the remote approach road. Jio and Airtel postpaid signal returns when you reach the valley. WiFi at your stay where available — very remote camps may not have it.

Stay: Purne camp / homestay as per selected tier

    Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

  6. Day 5 — Phuktal. The monastery built into a cliff.

Phuktal sits above a gorge in the Tsarap River valley. The monastery was built into a cave in the cliffside in approximately 1140 CE. The access is by foot — no road has ever reached it. The walk from the road takes between 45 minutes and 90 minutes depending on pace and current trail conditions. The first view of Phuktal, from across the gorge, is the photograph most travellers come for — the white structure emerging from the rock face as if it grew there. From close up, the scale is different: prayer halls built into the cave ceiling, monks who have not been to a city in months, butter lamps that have been burning in some form for 900 years. After the visit, drive toward Padum — Zanskar's administrative capital, a small town at the centre of a valley that has been Buddhist for over a thousand years. Check into your stay and rest. Jio and Airtel postpaid signal available in the village. Very remote camps may have limited WiFi — ask at check-in. Download any offline content you need before the remote section begins. Route: Purne → Phuktal access → Padum. Elevation: Phuktal region ~3,900 m. Stay: Padum.

Stay: Padum hotel / homestay as per selected tier

  7. Day 6 — The canyon road. Padum to Leh.

Leave Padum and drive toward Leh through the dramatic Zanskar canyon road system. This route is one of the great new Himalayan overland links, with river gorges, raw cliffs, remote villages and changing high-desert light. The day is long but rewarding, ending in Leh for a proper rest. Route Padum -> Zanskar canyon roads -> Nimmu -> Leh. Elevation Leh ~3,524 m. Stay Leh. Jio and Airtel postpaid signal available. Most stays have WiFi.

Stay: Leh hotel as per selected tier

    Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

  8. Day 7 — Leh. Rest and prepare.

This day is kept intentionally flexible. Rest after the Zanskar crossing, complete permit formalities, check gear and explore Leh at an easy pace. If guests feel well, the day can include Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Hall of Fame, local cafes or the market. Route Leh local. Elevation Leh ~3,524 m. Stay Leh. Jio and Airtel postpaid signal available. Most stays have WiFi.

Stay: Leh hotel as per selected tier

  9. Day 8 — Tso Moriri, then Hanle.

Drive from Leh into the high plateau world of Changthang, passing open valleys, remote settlements and the lake country around Tso Moriri. This is a long scenic road day and a major shift from monastery towns into nomadic highlands. Continue toward Hanle, one of Ladakh's most remote and atmospheric villages. Route Leh -> Chumathang / Mahe side -> Tso Moriri region -> Hanle. Elevation Hanle ~4,572 m. Stay Hanle. Jio and Airtel postpaid signal available. Most stays have WiFi.

Stay: Hanle homestay / guesthouse as per selected tier

    Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

  10. Day 9 — The Changthang plateau. Nomads and silence.

Spend the day around Hanle and Changthang with a slower cultural focus. Subject to local permissions and seasonal movement, the team can arrange a respectful nomadic-life interaction around the Changpa community, high-pasture life, local homes, monastery surroundings or dark-sky viewing. This day gives the route depth beyond only driving. Route Hanle and surrounding Changthang region. Elevation Hanle ~4,572 m. Stay Hanle. Jio and Airtel postpaid signal available. Most stays have WiFi.

Stay: Hanle homestay / guesthouse as per selected tier

    Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

  11. Day 10 — Pangong. The lake at last.

Leave Hanle and continue across eastern Ladakh toward Pangong Lake. The road moves through wide open country, military-sensitive zones and remote high-altitude terrain before reaching the lake's famous blue shoreline. The evening by Pangong is kept simple and quiet. Route Hanle -> Eastern Ladakh route -> Pangong Lake. Elevation Pangong ~4,350 m. Stay Pangong. Jio and Airtel postpaid signal available. Most stays have WiFi.

Stay: Pangong camp / cottage as per selected tier

    Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

  12. Day 11 — Over the passes to Nubra.

Wake beside Pangong and continue toward Nubra Valley, where Ladakh changes again from high lake country to cold-desert dunes, villages and monastery views. Depending on road conditions, the route follows the most suitable connection toward Nubra. Arrive by evening and settle into the valley. Route Pangong -> Shyok side / permitted route -> Nubra Valley. Elevation Nubra ~3,000 m. Stay Nubra. Jio and Airtel postpaid signal available. Most stays have WiFi.

Stay: Nubra hotel / resort / camp as per selected tier

  13. Day 12 — Khardung La and back to Leh.

Explore Nubra at an easy pace before returning to Leh. Depending on time and interest, visit Diskit Monastery, Hunder dunes or a local village before climbing back over Khardung La. Return to Leh for a comfortable evening and hot shower after the remote circuit. Route Nubra -> Khardung La -> Leh. Elevation Khardung La ~5,359 m. Stay Leh. Network drops at the high pass — expect silence above 4,500m for a few hours. Jio and Airtel postpaid signal returns once you descend to the valley. WiFi available at your stay.

Stay: Leh hotel as per selected tier

    Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

  14. Day 13 — Departure from Leh.

The circuit ends in Leh after the Nubra return. The team coordinates luggage, airport transfer timing and any onward domestic connection details. If your flight is later in the day, keep the morning simple: breakfast, final packing, one last walk through the market if time allows, and a calm transfer to Leh Airport. The journey closes with the mountains still visible from the departures gate. Jio and Airtel postpaid signal available. Most stays have WiFi. Route: Leh hotel -> Leh Airport / onward travel. Stay: Departure or extra night on request.

Questions before you book

Will I have mobile network and WiFi during the trip?

Most stays on this route have WiFi. Very remote camps at high-altitude passes or riverside locations may not — your guide will let you know in advance. For mobile network in Ladakh, a postpaid Jio or Airtel SIM is essential — prepaid SIMs do not work in Ladakh due to Inner Line regulations. Network coverage has improved significantly across the region: Leh, Kargil, Pangong Tso, Hanle, Demchok, Padum, and Zanskar town now have reliable signal on both Jio and Airtel. Expect brief network drops on high mountain passes and remote valley drives between stops — this is normal and part of the remote experience. Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) before entering remote zones.

Why is this route recommended for international guests?

It starts gently in Delhi, avoids flying straight into a packed high-altitude schedule, includes Manali and Leh acclimatisation, and still covers Zanskar, Changthang and Nubra in one complete circuit.

How many long driving days are involved?

Expect around two to three long mountain driving days of roughly 8 hours or more, depending on road conditions, permits, weather, photo stops and guest comfort. The route is scenic, but travellers should be ready for real Himalayan road time.

What makes this a complete Ladakh circuit?

The journey covers the three major deep-travel regions of Ladakh: Zanskar for raw canyon roads and Phuktal, Changthang for nomadic highlands and Hanle, and Nubra for cold-desert valleys, monasteries and the Khardung La side.

Are the prices fixed?

The USD figures are rough investment ranges per person. Final quotes depend on group size, rooming, stay category, vehicle count, flight plan, season, permits and any special experiences requested.

Can the route be made more comfortable?

Yes. Premium and luxury versions can upgrade Delhi, Manali, Leh and Nubra stays strongly, while remote places such as Purne, Hanle and Pangong still depend on the best available mountain inventory.

What should international travellers prepare?

Guests should carry valid passports, Indian visa, travel insurance with high-altitude and evacuation cover, warm layers, personal medicines, and sensible onward flight planning from Leh.
