Winter Ladakh: Pangong, Hanle & Nubra
A 10-day private winter Ladakh tour from Leh to Leh: Nubra's villages, Pangong Lake and Hanle's dark skies, with heated stays, warm water and a private winter-ready SUV. Explorer and Premium packages; December–March, subject to safe road access.
Winter Ladakh: Pangong, Hanle & Nubra is a private cold-season circuit for travellers who want frozen lake country, far-north villages and remote Changthang roads without rushing the altitude. The route starts gently in Leh, crosses Khardung La into Nubra, reaches the Balti side around Turtuk, attempts Pangong in winter and continues to Hanle before the long Tso Moriri to Leh return. The journey is designed to feel premium in the ways that matter in winter: acclimatisation-first pacing, carefully selected heated hotels and homestays with warm water, private SUV logistics, oxygen-aware route planning and daily road checks by local winter drivers. Day 8 is the expedition day: Hanle to Tso Moriri/Korzok and onward to Leh in one long run because winter stay inventory at Tso Moriri is not reliable enough for a premium private journey. Pangong, Hanle, Tso Moriri, high passes and Shyok-side movement remain subject to snow, ice, official movement, daylight and road clearance. This winter route is confirmed daily, not blindly followed from a map. Final movement depends on snow, ice, daylight, official road status and local driver judgement.

10-day Pangong, Hanle and Nubra itinerary
Day 1: Day 1: Arrive in Leh and let the altitude settle.
Land at Leh Airport and meet your Himalayan Locals driver outside the arrivals gate. The first day is deliberately slow because winter Ladakh begins at altitude, not on the road. You will be transferred to a heated Leh hotel, helped with check-in and asked to keep the afternoon simple: rest, hydrate, eat light and avoid unnecessary walking. In the evening, your route lead shares the winter plan in plain language: how Khardung La, Nubra, Turtuk, Pangong, Hanle and Tso Moriri will be checked each day, what can change in snow or ice, and how the buffer day protects the journey.
Stay: Centrally heated Leh hotel or similar
Day 2: Day 2: Leh local, monasteries and acclimatisation.
This is a useful acclimatisation day, not a rushed sightseeing day. After breakfast, move gently around Leh and nearby lower-altitude points such as Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, Tsemo viewpoint, Shey or Thiksey depending on weather, road condition and how the group is feeling. The idea is to get sunlight, walk slowly, understand the old capital and prepare the body before the route climbs higher over Khardung La. By evening, the team rechecks the next day's pass status and confirms the best Nubra stay zone: Diskit, Hunder, Sumur or Panamik side.
Stay: Centrally heated Leh hotel or similar
Day 3: Day 3: Leh to Nubra over Khardung La.
Start early from Leh only after the 48-hour acclimatisation window is complete, then climb towards Khardung La, one of Ladakh's most important winter road crossings. If the arrival timing or health check needs more time, the team swaps in the Leh buffer instead of pushing higher too soon. In winter the drive is not about speed: black ice, wind chill, snow clearance and convoy movement can decide the pace. The team keeps high-pass stops short, warm and practical, then descends into Nubra where the landscape changes from high pass to cold desert valley. If daylight allows, visit Diskit Monastery and the Hunder side before settling into a winter-appropriate traditional homestay or guesthouse selected for road access, warm bedding and reliable local hosting.
Stay: Nubra traditional homestay / guesthouse with winter heating where available
Day 4: Day 4: Turtuk, Balti villages and the far-north culture belt.
Keep this day for the far-north side of Nubra. Drive towards Turtuk and, if conditions allow, the Tyakshi-side village stretch. This is one of the most human days of the journey: Balti homes, stone lanes, winter orchards, apricot trees, old trade-route stories and mountain views that feel very different from central Ladakh. Because winter daylight is limited, the guide decides how deep to go and when to turn back. The priority is to experience Turtuk properly and still return to a reliable Nubra stay before dark, unless a suitable local overnight has been checked in advance.
Stay: Nubra traditional homestay / guesthouse; Turtuk overnight only if confirmed
Day 5: Day 5: Nubra to the frozen Pangong side.
This is the first big winter-route decision. After breakfast, the team checks whether the Nubra to Pangong movement through the Shyok side is open and sensible. If the road is clear, you follow the winter river-and-cliff route towards the Pangong/Tangtse side, stopping only where it is safe and warm enough. Pangong in winter can be fully frozen, partly frozen or glassy at the edges depending on temperature and wind, so the experience is handled honestly on the day. Stay is kept simple: a local homestay or Tangtse-side winter stay, chosen for access, warmth and road reliability. If Shyok closes, the team uses the safer Leh-backed alternate rather than forcing the route.
Stay: Pangong or Tangtse traditional homestay; Leh-backed alternate stay if road closes
Day 6: Day 6: Pangong to Hanle.
Leave after the morning lake light and continue into eastern Ladakh towards Hanle. The road gradually opens into wide plateau country: frozen streams, wind-shaped valleys, scattered Changthang settlements and long empty stretches where local route judgement matters more than a fixed clock. This is not a commercial sightseeing highway; it is a remote winter drive where permissions, daylight, wind, ice and official movement can affect timing. By evening, reach Hanle and settle into a homestay where the night is quiet, cold and wonderfully far from city light.
Stay: Hanle traditional homestay with winter heating where available
Day 7: Day 7: Hanle rest, village time and dark-sky country.
Hanle deserves a slow day, especially in winter. Instead of pushing straight onward, use this day to recover, warm up and understand the village. Visit the observatory area where permitted, take short drives around the valley, meet the rhythm of the settlement and keep the afternoon gentle. If the sky is clear, the night becomes one of the most memorable parts of the journey: dark-sky viewing, quiet photography and a real sense of the Changthang plateau after sunset. If weather is harsh, this day also gives the team room to protect the next long drive.
Stay: Hanle traditional homestay with winter heating where available
Day 8: Day 8: Hanle to Tso Moriri and the long return to Leh.
This is the expedition day and it is explained clearly before you start. Leave Hanle very early and attempt the Tso Moriri/Korzok side only if the winter road is open, daylight is sufficient and the driver is comfortable with the conditions. There is no planned night at Tso Moriri because winter accommodation around the lake is not dependable enough for a premium private journey. If the route is possible, you reach the lake zone, spend time carefully and continue all the way back to Leh. It is a long run, but it ends in a warmer Leh hotel with better support. If the road is unsafe, the team chooses a realistic alternate instead of treating the map as a promise.
Stay: Centrally heated Leh hotel or similar
Day 9: Day 9: Leh buffer, recovery and self exploration.
This day is intentionally kept inside the itinerary. In winter Ladakh, a buffer is not wasted time; it is what keeps the trip calm. If Day 8 runs as planned, use the day for rest, laundry, Leh market, cafes, monastery visits, last shopping or a slow photo walk. If snow, ice, road clearance or flight advisories affect the previous day, this buffer becomes the safety valve that protects the final departure. The team keeps it flexible so guests do not feel rushed after the most remote section of the journey.
Stay: Centrally heated Leh hotel or similar
Day 10: Day 10: Fly home from Leh.
Transfer to Leh Airport for your flight out. Pickup timing is confirmed the previous evening based on your airline schedule, winter airport advisories and expected road conditions inside Leh town. Guests leave with a route that has covered Nubra, Turtuk, Pangong, Hanle and the Tso Moriri attempt without pretending winter Ladakh can be run like a fixed summer highway.

Winter Ladakh tour questions
What is the private Winter Ladakh tour price?
Explorer starts at ₹45,000 per person + 5% GST (₹47,250 total) for four Indian-resident guests. Premium starts at ₹62,000 + 5% GST per person for four guests. International Explorer starts at USD 1,150 + 5% GST per person for four guests. Solo, two-guest and three-guest prices differ; see the pricing table. Flights are excluded. Confirm the early-bird quote, dates and stays with the team before paying.
Are the Winter Ladakh stays heated and is warm water available?
Yes. Our selected Explorer and Premium stays include room heating and warm water. Leh, Nubra, Pangong and Hanle have different heating and water arrangements; the team confirms the selected property and room before booking.
Which Explorer, Premium and luxury hotels can I choose?
Explorer options include Northern Singge in Leh, a heated Nubra homestay, Peaceful Cottage at Pangong and Lhamo Homestay in Hanle. Premium options include Pangong House, Hanle Lodge and Padma Lodge. Luxury upgrades at The Grand Dragon or The Abduz in Leh, and Stone Hedge or Lchang Nang in Nubra, are available on request at an extra quoted cost. There is no luxury tier at Pangong or Hanle. All stays are subject to availability.
When does this 10-day Leh-to-Leh winter tour operate?
Private departures are arranged from December 2026 to March 2027. The 10-day, 9-night itinerary starts and ends in Leh, includes acclimatisation time and a return buffer, and covers Nubra, Turtuk, Pangong and Hanle, with the Tso Moriri return subject to weather, permissions and safe road access.
Is this a fixed departure?
No. Winter Ladakh: Pangong, Hanle & Nubra is private-only because Nubra, Turtuk, Pangong, Hanle and Tso Moriri winter roads need daily routing decisions.
Will Pangong definitely be frozen?
No one can guarantee the exact lake state. Depending on temperature and wind, Pangong may be partly frozen, frozen at the edges or mirror-like in sections. The team focuses on safe access and honest conditions.
Can the route change in winter?
Yes. Nubra, Turtuk, Pangong, Hanle and Tso Moriri are weather-led in winter. If a pass or lake road is unsafe, the team adjusts the order, overnight stops or route while keeping the journey private and value-aligned.
Can we add Drass in winter?
Yes, as a separate Drass Winter Extension. The extension usually adds Day 10 Leh to Drass via Lamayuru and Kargil, Day 11 Drass valley and war memorial with return to Leh, and Day 12 fly home. Extension pricing is shared after checking Drass road status, hotel availability and winter vehicle movement.
Who should choose this over Snow Leopard Expedition?
Choose this if you want winter landscapes, Nubra villages and Pangong. Choose Snow Leopard Expedition if wildlife tracking and patient time in Ulley are the main reason for travelling.
