Full itinerary
Bagdogra to Phuentsholing
Meet your driver at Bagdogra Airport or NJP Railway Station and cross the Dooars foothills toward Phuentsholing. After check-in, keep the evening free to rest and organise your Bhutan entry documents. Pickup timing follows your confirmed flight or train arrival.
Stay: Phuentsholing - Explorer: Pendenling Hotel / Amothu View; Signature: Khamsum Hotel / Hotel Zsideoi; Luxury: limited in this border town, best available Signature stay used.
Meals: Dinner as per final plan
Phuentsholing to Thimphu
Complete the entry formalities in Phuentsholing before starting the mountain drive to Thimphu. The road leaves the warm foothills for forested ridges and small settlements, with comfort breaks arranged along the way. This is primarily a transfer day, so sightseeing waits until you have settled in. On arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy a quiet evening, with a short neighbourhood walk if you feel rested.
Stay: Thimphu - Explorer: Hotel Druk / Hotel HTC / Tara Phendeling View; Signature: City Heritage / Daralha / Tashichhoedling; Luxury: Pemako / Terma Linca.
Meals: Breakfast and dinner as per final plan
Thimphu to Punakha
Leave Thimphu for Dochula Pass and pause among its 108 chortens before descending into the Punakha Valley. Take time for photographs at the pass when visibility allows. In Punakha, the dzong and riverside setting introduce Bhutan's former capital, with visits arranged around access and arrival time. Check into your valley stay by evening and enjoy a slower finish after the mountain drive, without a crowded list of additional stops.
Stay: Punakha - Explorer: Punatsangchhu Cottages / RKPO Green Resort; Signature: Dhensa Boutique Resort; Luxury: Pemako Punakha.
Meals: Breakfast and dinner as per final plan
Punakha to Gasa Valley and Hot Springs
Leave Punakha's river valley and travel toward Gasa, where the road becomes a more remote part of the journey. Allow time for the drive and comfort breaks before settling into the local guesthouse or homestay. If access permits, the hot-spring area can form part of the afternoon; your guide checks conditions locally. Keep the evening at your stay, preparing for the highland days and a simpler level of accommodation than in the western towns.
Stay: Gasa - Homestay / guest house: Namgay Village / Chimi Farm House / Gasa Tshachu Guest House; best available stay confirmed before booking.
Meals: Breakfast and dinner as per final plan
Gasa to Laya Village
Travel toward the accessible trailhead and continue on foot into Laya's highland setting with your guide. The walking pace follows your fitness, weather and the condition of the trail, with breaks along the way. Village time depends on the day's progress and the overnight plan confirmed before departure. On arrival, settle into the local accommodation and spend the evening resting; this part of the journey prioritises acclimatisation and practical access over a busy sightseeing schedule.
Stay: Laya / Gasa highland area - Homestay / guest house, selected with local availability and route access.
Meals: Breakfast and dinner as per final plan
Laya Village Exploration
Keep the day around Laya, walking through the village and nearby highland surroundings at a steady pace. Your guide helps arrange respectful encounters with local life, with time to notice the buildings, paths and mountain setting rather than covering a long distance. Take breaks at your stay during the afternoon as needed. The evening remains quiet, with dinner and a discussion of the return route, weather and walking conditions for the following morning.
Stay: Laya / Gasa highland area - Homestay / guest house, selected with local availability and route access.
Meals: Breakfast and dinner as per final plan
Laya to Phobjikha Valley
Leave the Gasa or Laya highland area using the exit route agreed with the local team. Where walking forms part of the return, start early and allow time to reach the vehicle before the onward journey toward Phobjikha. This is mainly a transfer stage, with breaks arranged around access and the remaining daylight. Settle into the valley stay when the confirmed routing permits; additional sightseeing belongs on a separate day.
Stay: Phobjikha - Explorer: Tashi Farm House / Khewang Farm House / Dewachen Hotel; Signature: Gangtey Lodge; Luxury: limited in-valley, best available Signature stay used.
Meals: Breakfast and dinner as per final plan
Phobjikha and Gangtey Exploration
Start with Gangtey Monastery and spend the rest of the morning walking in Phobjikha Valley. Your guide selects a manageable section of the valley trail, with pauses around the meadows and village edges. Allow the afternoon for photographs, a warm drink and time at your stay. If cranes are present during your visit, observe them from a respectful distance. Return before evening for dinner and a quiet night in the valley.
Stay: Phobjikha - Explorer: Tashi Farm House / Khewang Farm House / Dewachen Hotel; Signature: Gangtey Lodge; Luxury: limited in-valley, best available Signature stay used.
Meals: Breakfast and dinner as per final plan
Phobjikha to Paro
Enjoy a final morning in Phobjikha before setting out toward Paro. The westward journey crosses forested hills and changing valleys, so most of the day belongs to the road. Your driver arranges breaks and photo stops around the journey rather than adding a busy sightseeing programme. On reaching Paro, check into your hotel and rest. The evening gives you time to prepare for the hike or cultural activities planned for tomorrow.
Stay: Paro - Explorer: Hotel Tashiling / Padma Gayul Resort / Tenzinling Resort; Signature: Jonju Boutique / Golden Pheasant / River Front; Luxury: COMO Uma Paro / Amankora / Six Senses.
Meals: Breakfast and dinner as per final plan
Tiger's Nest Hike and Paro Sightseeing
Start early for Paro Taktsang, known as Tiger's Nest, and follow the forest trail toward the cliffside monastery. Walk at a comfortable pace, allowing time for the climb, viewpoints and steps near the monastery. After returning to the trailhead, take a break before any further Paro sightseeing; shorter visits depend on your energy and the remaining time. Finish the evening at your hotel or around the town, with dinner and time to rest.
Stay: Paro - Explorer: Hotel Tashiling / Padma Gayul Resort / Tenzinling Resort; Signature: Jonju Boutique / Golden Pheasant / River Front; Luxury: COMO Uma Paro / Amankora / Six Senses.

Paro to Phuentsholing to Bagdogra / NJP Drop
Leave Paro early for the drive to Phuentsholing, complete the exit process and continue to Bagdogra Airport or NJP Railway Station. This is a long departure day; the team checks the full transfer against your onward ticket before confirming the schedule.

Questions before you book

Travellers who want a slower, less standard Bhutan plan with local trails, Gasa, Laya and Phobjikha.
Can luxury hotels be added?
Yes, where available. Some remote areas may only have homestay or simpler guest house options.
Is the route suitable for international guests too?
Yes, but pricing and inclusions change because Bhutan SDF, licensed guide rules and hotel categories must be recalculated by nationality and dates.
