Offbeat Winter Ladakh: Changthang Journey

Private winter journeys into Changthang, with protected Leh acclimatisation, Tso Moriri, Chumathang and Hanle.

Offbeat Winter Ladakh: Changthang Journey moves into the high plateau around Tso Moriri, Korzok, Chumathang, Nyoma and Hanle. The first two days stay in Leh for acclimatisation before any remote lake or village transfer. November is early winter, so snow cover and frozen lake edges are possible rather than promised. This journey runs privately for your dates and group, following a weather-led route. Road openings, black ice, health, permits and homestay availability shape each day. Your private vehicle, stays and the final fare are confirmed only after winter stays, vehicle allocation and local access checks. If the Changthang road is unsuitable, the team discusses a safer Leh and Indus Valley alternative before the journey is confirmed.

Full itinerary

  1. Day 1 — Arrive in Leh and let the altitude settle.

Land in Leh and keep the day deliberately slow. Winter Ladakh begins at altitude, so the first priority is rest, hydration and a warm hotel check-in rather than sightseeing. The team meets you at the airport, reviews the route, checks winter clothing and explains how the next few days will be adjusted around weather, road and health conditions. If you feel comfortable by evening, take a short market walk and return early.

Stay: Leh hotel with heated room

    Meals: Dinner included

  2. Day 2 — Leh acclimatisation and Indus Valley.

Keep a second night in Leh before entering the high Changthang plateau. Rest, check winter gear and take an easy Indus-side outing only if everyone feels well.

Stay: Leh hotel with heated room

    Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

  3. Day 3 — Leh to Tso Moriri via Chumathang.

Leave Leh after breakfast and follow the Indus towards Upshi and Chumathang. The hot springs at Chumathang are a natural winter pause before the road climbs deeper into Changthang. Continue through Mahe and Sumdo towards Korzok, the village beside Tso Moriri. By evening, the lake edge feels still and severe: wind, ice, prayer flags and a small settlement holding on through winter.

Stay: Korzok / Tso Moriri homestay with bukhari or local heating

    Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

  4. Day 4 — Tso Moriri to Hanle across the high plateau.

Start slowly because both cold and altitude are stronger here. After breakfast, drive from Korzok towards Nyoma, Loma and Hanle, crossing open Changthang landscapes where the scale of the plateau becomes clear. The route is about solitude: frozen streams, distant herder settlements, wild ridges and long sections without reliable network. Reach Hanle by evening and settle into a warm local homestay.

Stay: Hanle homestay such as Lhamo Homestay or similar

    Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

  5. Day 5 — Hanle, dark skies and Changpa winter life.

This is the slowest day of the journey. Visit Hanle Monastery, walk through the village at an easy pace and understand how people live through winter in one of Ladakh's remotest settlements. If the observatory region is accessible and permissions allow, the team includes it from outside or as locally permitted. After sunset, step out for stargazing only if the sky is clear and the temperature/wind are manageable.

Stay: Hanle homestay such as Lhamo Homestay or similar

    Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

  6. Day 6 — Hanle to Leh via Nyoma, Mahe and Chumathang.

Leave Hanle after breakfast and retrace the plateau road towards Loma, Nyoma, Mahe and Chumathang. The return drive is long, so the day is kept practical: early start, warm drink stops, short photography breaks and steady movement back to Leh. If roads or health require a slower pace, the team may split the return with an intermediate halt.

Stay: Leh hotel with heated room

    Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

  7. Day 7 — Departure from Leh.

After breakfast, transfer to Leh Airport according to your flight timing. The route ends here, but the team keeps this morning simple because winter flights can be affected by weather. Guests who want a safer buffer can add one extra Leh night before flying out.

    Stay: Departure day

    Meals: Breakfast included
