Zanskar Road Trip from Manali

Most Ladakh trips fly into Leh and drive north to Nubra, east to Pangong. This one does neither. It approaches Zanskar from the south — crossing Shinku La at 5,091m, descending into the Lungnak valley, and arriving at a monastery built into a cliff that the road has never reached. Seven days, one mountain kingdom, and a route that most travellers never find. The fixed departure runs on a proven circuit: overnight Volvo to Manali, Atal Tunnel into Lahaul, Shinku La into Zanskar, Gombo Rangjon, Purne camp, Phuktal Gompa trek, Padum and its monastery circuit, Pensi La, Drang Drung Glacier, Dzongkhul Gompa, and the return across Shinku La. Everything is arranged — vehicle, permits, stays, oxygen support, local guide — so the only thing you carry is what fits in a duffle bag. This route was the first expedition we designed, in 2019. Led by the oldest and most experienced local team organizing Zanskar expeditions, this journey is our trademark. It has not changed significantly because it does not need to.

Day-by-day itinerary

1. Night 0 — The overnight run. Delhi to Manali.

   Your Zanskar fixed departure begins before the mountains appear. Economy guests travel by Volvo 9400 or Scania, while Premium guests travel by Volvo 9600 for the overnight Delhi/Chandigarh to Manali sector. Luxury guests can choose to fly to Kullu Airport or a nearby airport; Himalayan Locals provides premium SUV pickup, quoted separately as per airfare, airport and vehicle cost. All guests can request an upgrade to Zingbus Maxx at extra cost, subject to seat and schedule availability. Delhi boarding is planned in the late-evening window, with the final bus schedule shared for the batch. As the route leaves the plains, the journey slowly climbs into the Himalayan foothills, giving you a relaxed start before the real expedition road begins. Please report at ISBT Kashmiri Gate at least 30-45 minutes before departure. Himalayan Locals provides the Volvo ticket, live tracking and boarding details, but reaching the correct boarding point and catching the bus on time is the guest's responsibility. If a guest misses the Volvo due to late arrival, wrong boarding point, traffic, personal delay or any other reason, Himalayan Locals will not be responsible for refund, replacement ticket, extra hotel, cab or alternate travel cost. Seat details, live tracking, coach number and boarding information are shared 6 to 24 hours before departure. Chandigarh boarding can be aligned as per batch logistics. 2. Day 1 — Manali. The last warm city.

   Arrive in Manali by morning and step into the first mountain chapter of the expedition. Our team coordinates pickup from the Volvo drop point and assists with hotel check-in, so the day stays easy and stress-free. This is a self-exploration and acclimatization day, not a guided sightseeing day, because the route climbs much higher from tomorrow. Rest, freshen up, hydrate, and then explore Mall Road, Old Manali, local cafes or Hadimba Devi Temple at your own pace. In the evening, return to the hotel for dinner and an early night. 3. Day 2 — Shinku La. The pass at 5,091m.

   This is the day the trip becomes a true Himalayan expedition. Leave Manali after breakfast, cross Atal Tunnel and enter Lahaul's dramatic valley system. The drive moves through Keylong, Jispa and Darcha before the SUV climbs towards Shinku La, the high gateway into Zanskar. Beyond the pass, the landscape changes suddenly: wider, wilder, quieter and more remote. Gombo Rangjon appears like a sacred mountain rising alone from the valley. By late afternoon or evening, descend towards Purne, a peaceful riverside village. Network unavailable at the pass and on the remote approach road. Jio and Airtel postpaid signal returns when you reach the valley. WiFi at your stay where available — very remote camps may not have it. Route: Manali → Atal Tunnel → Keylong → Jispa → Darcha → Shinku La → Gombo Rangjon → Purne. Elevation: Shinku La ~5,090 m; Purne region ~3,660 m. Stay: Grand Purne Camps.

4. Day 3 — Phuktal. The monastery in the cliff.

   Today is one of the reasons this Zanskar departure sells so strongly. After breakfast, the vehicle drops you close to the Phuktal trek start point, from where the walk is usually a simple 25-30 minute approach each way on the current access route. This is not a technical trek and is much easier than it used to be earlier, but guests should wear basic sports shoes or hiking shoes with good grip. Most guests complete the up-and-down walk with monastery time in around 2 hours, depending on pace, photos and weather. Phuktal is not a regular monastery stop; it is a cliffside cave monastery built into the mountain, known for its extraordinary setting and deep spiritual atmosphere. Please follow monastery etiquette: dress modestly, keep voices low, do not touch prayer objects, ask before photographing monks or interiors, avoid smoking/loud music, and respect any restricted areas or prayer timings. Network can be patchy, but Jio and Airtel may work around the Phuktal Gompa side; Purne itself usually has little to no signal. After the visit, return towards the road head and continue by SUV to Padum, the cultural and administrative heart of Zanskar. If time, road and driver decision allow, the route may take a short detour towards Ichar village; this is not a guaranteed itinerary inclusion and is treated only as a possible bonus stop. By evening, check into your Padum stay and rest after a day that combines walking, spirituality and remote road travel. Important Note: If the previous night halt had to shift near Darcha/Jispa because of road or weather conditions, the team starts early and manages the same route flow towards Phuktal and Padum. Route: Purne / backup halt → Phuktal Gompa trek start point → Phuktal Gompa → road head → Padum, with possible Ichar village detour if time allows. Elevation: Purne/Padum region ~3,500-3,660 m; Phuktal Gompa approx. ~3,900 m. Stay: Padum stay.

5. Day 4 — Padum. The capital of Zanskar.

   After the long entry into Zanskar and the Phuktal day, today is intentionally slower and more cultural. Start with Karsha Monastery, the largest monastery in Zanskar, set beautifully on the hillside with wide valley views. Continue to Stongdey Monastery, known for its peaceful setting, prayer halls and layered Himalayan silence. Later, visit Zangla Palace, connected to Zanskar's old royal history and to the scholar Alexander Csoma de Koros. Time around Kumik Village adds a softer local touch: homes, fields, village lanes and the rhythm of high-altitude life. This day helps guests understand that Zanskar is not only a road trip; it is a living Buddhist valley with memory, architecture and village culture. Optional add-ons can be arranged at extra cost for guests who want a deeper, more curated cultural day: a special outdoor picnic in a scenic valley setting, a guided interaction with monks subject to monastery schedule and permissions, or a local cultural performance for private groups. These experiences are not part of the standard inclusion and depend on group size, season, monastery availability, local permissions and advance confirmation. 6. Day 5 — The glacier road. Pensi La and Drang Drung.

   Today adds Zanskar's big landscape drama. After breakfast, drive towards Pensi La, the high pass connecting the Zanskar side with the Suru Valley side. The route moves through open valleys, wind-shaped mountains and raw bends where the scale of the Himalayas feels immense. From the glacier viewpoint, Drang Drung appears like a frozen river of ice flowing between mountains, one of the most memorable sights in Ladakh. On the return, stop around Atting Village to see traditional mud houses and the quieter agricultural life of Zanskar. Dzongkhul Gompa, associated with Naropa's meditation tradition, adds a spiritual close to the day with cave chambers, murals and a powerful cliffside setting. Return to Padum by evening after a day shaped by ice, stone, village life and silence. Network unavailable at the pass and on the remote approach road. 7. Day 6 — Padum to Manali via Shinku La.

   Begin the long return from Padum after breakfast, retracing the same raw Himalayan route that brought you into Zanskar. The SUV moves back through the Purne side and the open landscapes around Gombo Rangjon, where one final stop gives you time to photograph the sacred monolith and absorb the scale of the valley. From there, climb again towards Shinku La and cross back into Lahaul. The terrain slowly shifts from Zanskar's stark, remote wilderness to the wider valleys of Darcha, Jispa, Keylong and eventually Manali. Planned halts are kept for food, rest and photographs, but timing depends on road and weather conditions. Arrive in Manali by evening, check into your hotel and close the expedition with dinner. 8. Day 7 — Manali morning. Overnight bus to Delhi.

   Spend the final morning in Manali at an easy pace after several days inside the raw Himalayan interior. After breakfast, rest at the hotel, explore nearby cafes, pick up last-minute shopping, or take a short walk through town before the evening Volvo departure. As per the bus schedule, proceed to the boarding point by self-transfer and board the overnight Laxmi Holidays Volvo back to Delhi. Himalayan Locals provides the return Volvo ticket and boarding details, but reaching the correct Manali boarding point and catching the bus on time is the guest's responsibility. If a guest misses the Volvo due to late arrival, wrong boarding point, traffic, personal delay or any other reason, Himalayan Locals will not be responsible for refund, replacement ticket, extra hotel, cab or alternate travel cost. The mountains gradually fade into the plains overnight, but the memory of Shinku La, Gombo Rangjon, Phuktal and Padum travels back with you. Important Notes: Breakfast is included. Luggage can usually be kept at the hotel until departure time. Drop to the Volvo boarding point is not included on the last day. What is the best time for a Zanskar road trip?

June to September is the core road-travel window described in our route planning. Fixed departures are listed from April to October, with early and late dates subject to pass clearance, weather and local confirmation.

How many days do you need for Zanskar?

This circuit has seven mountain days from Manali, with Delhi or Chandigarh overnight Volvo travel around the mountain itinerary. Check the selected departure’s boarding and return schedule before booking.

How difficult is the hike to Phuktal Monastery?

The day-three itinerary describes a vehicle drop close to the trek start and a roughly 25–30-minute approach walk. Walking time depends on the confirmed drop point, trail conditions and your pace. Tell the team about mobility concerns before booking.

Is this a private Zanskar trip or a fixed departure?

The published seasonal dates are small fixed departures, with a maximum of eight travellers. Private departures and customised stay or route arrangements can be requested separately.

Can Zanskar be reached by road from Manali?

The itinerary approaches Zanskar from Manali through Atal Tunnel, Lahaul and Shinku La, continuing through Gombo Rangjon to Purne and Padum. High-pass access depends on weather, road clearance and permissions.

What vehicle is used for the Zanskar expedition?

The mountain circuit uses premium SUVs with an experienced local driver-cum-guide. The operations team confirms vehicle allocation and seating for the group. Delhi or Chandigarh to Manali is an overnight Volvo sector.

Will I have mobile network and WiFi during the trip?

Most stays on this route have WiFi. Very remote camps at high-altitude passes or riverside locations may not — your guide will let you know in advance. For mobile network in Ladakh, a postpaid Jio or Airtel SIM is essential — prepaid SIMs do not work in Ladakh due to Inner Line regulations. Network coverage has improved significantly across the region: Leh, Kargil, Pangong Tso, Hanle, Demchok, Padum, and Zanskar town now have reliable signal on both Jio and Airtel. Expect brief network drops on high mountain passes and remote valley drives between stops — this is normal and part of the remote experience.
