The First 48 Hours in Leh for International Travellers
The best first days in Leh are not crowded with plans. They are built around acclimatisation, shorter walks, slower meals, and learning how the region wants to be entered.

If you organise the first 48 hours in Leh well, the whole trip opens more gracefully. If you treat those hours as dead time, or worse, as an opportunity to prove stamina, Ladakh often answers back with fatigue and flatness.
Stay close, eat simply, let the altitude introduce itself
Rest at your accommodation on arrival day. Eat normally, stay hydrated and monitor how you feel. Ladakh Tourism advises at least 48 hours of complete rest before higher-altitude travel.
Continue resting through the first 48 hours
Keep Day 2 free of planned monastery circuits, viewpoints and strenuous walking. Complete at least 48 hours from arrival before higher-altitude travel; feeling energetic does not mean acclimatisation is complete.
- Drink water before you feel thirsty.
- Leave outings until after the initial rest period and reassess your health before increasing altitude.
- Sleep properly even if you feel excited enough to stay out.
