Triund Trek for Couples: A Private Night in the Dhauladhars

A Triund trek can be the best part of a Dharamshala holiday for two, if the night is private and warm. How to plan it, what to ask for, and what it costs.

By Himalayan Locals Editorial Team

For couples, the walk to Triund is rarely the problem. The night is. Most packages put you in a group of strangers, a shared campsite and a queue for the toilet. Take those away, add a warm room and a kitchen cooking for the two of you, and the trek stops being an endurance test and becomes the quiet centre of a holiday in the hills.

What a genuinely private trek should include

  • A guide for the two of you, not a group leader shared with fifteen others.
  • A room of your own with heating, and a washroom you do not share with other groups.
  • Food cooked for you, at your pace, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices.
  • Hotel pickup and drop, so the day starts and ends without arranging taxis.
  • Flexibility when the weather turns, without losing your money.

A briefing at your hotel

We meet you at your hotel in McLeod Ganj the day before the trek. It is a short, unhurried conversation: the weather, what to wear, how you like to walk, what you would like to eat, and what time we will collect you. If one of you is more nervous about the climb than the other, this is the moment to say so.

Up through the forest to the cottage

In the morning a car takes you to Bhagsu Square, where your guide is waiting. Your guide carries up to 5 kg of your things, so you each walk with a light daypack. The route climbs past Bhagsu Waterfall and leaves the crowds behind for the forest, on an old local path about 2 km shorter than the usual trail. It takes around three hours with stops.

At the cottage, siddu, the steamed Himachali bread, is served with ghee and chutney alongside a cup of Kangra tea. Lunch is rajma or dal from Bharmour with rice. The afternoon is yours: read, sleep, or sit outside and watch the light move across the Kangra Valley.

Bonfire, dinner and a warm room

As it gets dark, tea and pakoras come out by the bonfire, weather and fire-safety rules permitting. Dinner is Himachali: khatta meat or chana madra, a seasonal sabzi, rice, chapatis and gur wale meethe chawal to finish. Your room is warmed by a traditional bukhari, and the staff bring hot water if you would like a bath before bed. The guest washroom is Western-style, with running water, and kept for guests only.

Triund in the morning

After a mountain breakfast of babru or aloo paratha, eggs or toast, you walk up to Triund with your guide, about 2.5 km and two hours with short stops. You reach the ridge before the day-hikers from town arrive in numbers. Lunch is packed for the top, and then you walk down to Bhagsu, where the car takes you back to your hotel.

What it costs, and what is included

For two guests, the private trek costs ₹12,500 in total plus 5% GST (₹13,125, or ₹6,250 each before tax). A solo traveller pays ₹7,000 plus GST, and a family or small group of three or four pays ₹5,000 per person plus GST. That covers your guide for both days, one night at the cottage, every meal from the welcome siddu to the packed lunch on Triund, trekking poles, the bonfire, your hotel briefing, and hotel pickup and drop in McLeod Ganj.

You book with a ₹2,000 booking amount online and pay the balance on arrival in McLeod Ganj. Date changes are free when the cottage is available on the new date, including changes caused by weather.

Before and after the trek

Two nights in McLeod Ganj or Dharamshala on either side of the trek make an easy long weekend: a slow morning at the Dalai Lama Temple, a walk to St. John in the Wilderness, an evening at Naddi for the sunset. We can add hotel nights before or after the trek and confirm the hotel and price before you pay.
