Winter Spiti itinerary: Shimla, Sangla, Tabo, Kaza and Kalpa

  1. Day 0: Delhi → Shimla | Overnight Volvo

Board the confirmed overnight Volvo from Delhi. Keep winter layers and essentials in your hand luggage; the boarding point and reporting time are shared before travel. This bus night is outside the seven hotel nights. Approximate altitude: 2,200m at Shimla, the destination.

    Stay: Overnight Volvo

  2. Day 1: Shimla | Settle in and rest

Arrive in Shimla and transfer to Backwoods or a similar heated stay. Keep the day easy after the overnight journey. Early check-in depends on availability. Rest today helps prepare for the journey; it does not guarantee acclimatisation for the higher villages later. Approximate altitude: 2,200m at Shimla, the destination.

    Stay: Backwoods / similar

  3. Day 2: Shimla → Sangla | Into the Baspa Valley

Leave after breakfast and follow the road through Narkanda, Rampur and Karcham into Sangla. Stops follow daylight and road conditions. Settle into your heated room for the first of two Sangla nights. Approximate altitude: 2,600m at the overnight area / destination.

Stay: Royal Castle / Prakash Regency / Kamru Camps & Cottages / similar

  4. Day 3: Sangla → Chitkul → Sangla | A valley day

After breakfast, explore the Baspa Valley. Attempt the drive through Rakchham towards Chitkul only when snow clearance and local advice permit. Return to Sangla; if access closes, the team chooses safe valley outings instead. Approximate altitude: 3,450m on the Chitkul outing; overnight in Sangla at approximately 2,600m.

Stay: Royal Castle / Prakash Regency / Kamru Camps & Cottages / similar

  5. Day 4: Sangla → Tabo | Kinnaur gives way to Spiti

Make an early start towards Karcham, Pooh, Khab, the Nako approach and Sumdo, continuing to Tabo. These are route points, not guaranteed sightseeing stops. Keep breaks sensible on this long transfer and tell the team about altitude symptoms. Approximate altitude: 3,280m at the overnight area / destination.

Stay: Tabo Mud Retreat / similar

  6. Day 5: Tabo → Kaza | Along the Spiti River

Leave after breakfast for Kaza. A Tabo monastery visit and stops along the Spiti River are shaped by local opening times, weather and road clearance. Reach your selected heated stay in Kaza and keep the afternoon gentle. Approximate altitude: 3,650m at the overnight area / destination.

Stay: Grand Spiti Manor / Osel Hotel Kaza / similar

  7. Day 6: Kaza Local | Monasteries and high villages

The accessible circuit may include Key, Kibber, Chicham, Langza, Hikkim and Komic. The team checks road conditions, daylight and guest wellbeing before choosing the sequence. High villages approach roughly 4,500–4,600m; do not ascend with altitude symptoms. Return to Kaza. Approximate altitude: 4,600m at the highest attempted outing.

Stay: Grand Spiti Manor / Osel Hotel Kaza / similar

  8. Day 7: Kaza → Kalpa | The road back to Kinnaur

Start early for the return via Tabo, Sumdo and Khab towards Reckong Peo and Kalpa. This is a long mountain transfer, with stops chosen around access and daylight. Finish the day at your selected heated Kalpa stay. Approximate altitude: 2,960m at the overnight area / destination.

Stay: Kalpa Retreat / Hotel Rollingrang / Hotel Apple Pie / similar

  9. Day 8: Kalpa → Shimla | Overnight Volvo to Delhi

After breakfast, return through Rampur and Narkanda to Shimla. Board the confirmed overnight Volvo to Delhi, with arrival expected on Day 9 morning. Keep onward plans flexible because winter delays can affect the connection. Approximate altitude: 2,200m at Shimla, the destination.

Stay: Overnight Volvo; no hotel night
