About Zanskar

Where the valley folds and the world goes quiet

Zanskar is a high-altitude valley district in eastern Ladakh, enclosed by some of the most formidable mountain terrain in Asia. Padum, the main town, sits at around 3,500 metres, while surrounding passes push well above 4,800 metres. The scale of isolation here is unlike almost anywhere else accessible by road.

The cultural fabric of Zanskar is Tibetan Buddhist, deeply woven into the landscape. Phuktal Monastery — built into a cliff above a river gorge — is one of the most dramatic sacred sites in the Himalayas. Karsha Gompa, Zangla Palace and Stongdey Monastery tell a story of a civilisation that found footing in extraordinary geography.

Roads into Zanskar open in June and typically close by early November. The main access routes all require confident SUV driving, local road knowledge and careful day-planning. Our Zanskar itineraries are built around road realism, altitude awareness and the cultural depth that makes this region genuinely remarkable.

Permits & Logistics

What you need to travel Zanskar

Inner Line Permit

An ILP is required to enter Zanskar as it falls within a restricted zone. All Indian nationals can obtain this online or via a registered operator. Foreign nationals require additional clearances — we handle all permit logistics.

Vehicle requirements

A strong SUV — Innova Crysta, Scorpio N, or Fortuner — is essential for all Zanskar routes. Roads involve rocky mountain passes, river crossings, and long remote stretches where vehicle quality matters enormously.

Road season awareness

Zanskar roads open roughly in June and close by early November depending on snowfall. Route conditions can change overnight near the passes. We monitor road status and adjust day plans in real time for all our groups.
