Triund Trek Best Time: Month-by-Month Weather & Snow

When to walk to Triund for clear views, easy trails or a chance of snow, and when to avoid it. A month-by-month guide to the seasons above McLeod Ganj.

By Himalayan Locals Editorial Team

Triund can be walked for much of the year, but it is a different trek in every season. Spring brings flowering forest, autumn the clearest views, winter cold and the chance of snow, and the monsoon rain, mist and slippery stone. Here is how the year usually unfolds on the ridge.

The best months for Triund

For most travellers, March to June and late September to November are the most comfortable months to walk to Triund. Late September to November usually brings the clearest mountain views. December to February is cold, with snow possible on the upper trail. July to mid-September is the monsoon, when the trail is at its wettest and most slippery.

What to expect through the year

A general guide only. Conditions vary from year to year, and no date guarantees clear skies.
MonthsWhat to expect
March and AprilSpring. Days warm up and rhododendrons often flower in the forest. Snow can linger on the high Dhauladhars, and early in the season on the upper trail.
May and JuneThe warmest and busiest walking months. Town can feel hot while the ridge stays pleasant. Haze can soften the views, and pre-monsoon storms are possible in June.
July to mid-SeptemberMonsoon in the Kangra region. Expect rain, mist, leeches and slippery stone steps. Views come and go in short breaks.
Late September to NovemberPost-monsoon. Often the clearest air of the year and sharp views of the range. Nights turn cold by November.
December to FebruaryWinter. Short, cold days and the possibility of snow and ice on the upper trail and ridge, varying with each weather system.

When the Dhauladhars are clearest

After the monsoon rains wash the air, October and November tend to give the longest, sharpest views from Triund: the snow-streaked wall of the Dhauladhars behind you and the Kangra valley spread out below. Mornings are usually clearer than afternoons in every season, which is one reason a night partway up the trail makes such a difference.

Is there snow at Triund?

Snow is possible at Triund from December to February, and sometimes earlier or later on the high ground above it. It is never guaranteed on a particular date: one week can bring a fresh fall, the next a clear, dry trail. When there is snow or ice, the walk becomes slower and needs proper footwear and a guide's judgement. Our guide to the Triund trek in winter covers it in detail.

Should you walk to Triund in the rain?

The monsoon is the hardest season on this trail. Rain makes the stone steps slippery, streams rise and cloud often hides the view entirely. In some years the Kangra district administration has also restricted trekking during the monsoon. If your dates fall between July and mid-September, check local advisories before you travel and keep your plans flexible.
