Triund Trek in Winter: Snow, Cold & What to Pack
Winter on Triund means quiet trails and a chance of snow, but cold nights and icy steps. What December to February is like and what to carry.
By Himalayan Locals Editorial Team
Winter is Triund's quiet season. The crowds thin, the air after a clear spell is sharp, and with luck the meadow wears a coat of snow. It is also the season when the trail is most demanding and the night is coldest. Done well, it can be the most memorable time of year to walk.
Triund in December, January and February
- Cold: days on the ridge are cold and nights fall below freezing in mid-winter.
- Short days: you have fewer hours of daylight for the climb and the descent.
- Snow and ice: snowfall is possible from December to February. After a fresh fall, the upper trail and the ridge can be icy.
- Changing conditions: one week can bring a deep fall, the next a clear, dry trail. Nothing is guaranteed on a particular date.
Is Triund open in winter?
Triund is usually walkable through the winter, but heavy snowfall can restrict access, especially on the ground above the ridge towards the Snowline. Whether you reach the top on a given day depends on the snow, the ice and the weather. A good guide decides on the morning and turns back rather than push on into danger.
What to wear and carry in winter
- Waterproof trekking shoes with deep grip; micro-spikes when the trail is icy, as your guide advises.
- Thermal base layers, a fleece and an insulated down jacket.
- A warm hat, gloves and a buff or scarf for the wind on the ridge.
- A head torch, because winter light fades early.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen: sunlight on snow is bright.
- Trekking poles, which are provided on our private trek.
Why the night matters most in winter
In winter, a night in a tent on the open ridge is a real test of your sleeping bag. Our cottage, roughly 2.5 km below Triund, offers a different kind of winter night: a room heated by a traditional bukhari, hot water brought for your bath, solar power with an inverter backup, and a Pahari dinner by the fire. The warm room changes the evening; it does not change the conditions outside, so the walk still depends on the weather.

Planning around winter weather
Keep your winter dates flexible. On our private trek, if we cancel because of unsafe weather or an official closure and no new date suits you, we refund your booking amount in full. Within seven days of the trek you can still move your date once, free of charge, subject to availability.
