Triund Trek for Beginners & Families: A Planning Guide

Is Triund right for a first trek or a family with children? Day hike or overnight, when a guide is worth it, and how to keep the walk enjoyable.

By Himalayan Locals Editorial Team

Triund is many people's first Himalayan trek, and for good reason: no technical skill, a clear destination and one of the great mountain views of Himachal at the top. Whether it suits you, your partner or your children comes down to three choices: one day or overnight, with a guide or without, and how you pace it.

Is Triund good for beginners?

Yes, for active beginners. The walk is short by Himalayan standards, but it climbs almost without pause on stony ground and the descent is long. If you can walk uphill steadily for an hour and climb several flights of stairs without stopping, you can enjoy Triund at a gentle pace. Our honest guide to Triund trek difficulty covers what the walk really feels like.

One day or overnight?

OptionBest for
Day hike, up and downFit walkers short on time. One long day; start early and allow plenty of daylight for the descent.
Overnight in a tent on the ridgeTravellers happy with shared campsites, basic toilets and a cold night, in exchange for sunset and sunrise on top.
Overnight in a cottage below the ridgeBeginners, couples and families. The climb is split over two days, with a warm room, a washroom and hot food in between.

Do you need a guide for Triund?

On the main trail from Galu Devi Temple, many walkers go without a guide in good weather; the path is clear and busy. A guide earns their place when you take the quieter Bhagsu route, where forest paths branch; when the weather is uncertain or the trail icy; when you walk with children; and when you travel alone. A guide also sets a pace that keeps a first trek enjoyable rather than exhausting.

On our private trek, your guide is dedicated to your party and carries up to 5 kg of your things. Solo women travellers can ask for a female guide.

Triund with children

  • Split the walk. Two shorter climbs are far kinder to young legs than one long day.
  • Pack snacks and water for frequent, short stops; small rewards keep children walking.
  • Agree a turnaround time before you start, and keep to it.
  • Dress children in layers and good shoes; the ridge is colder and windier than town.
  • Keep a firm hand on the descent, where loose stones cause most slips.

Our cottage takes up to four guests, on double sharing, with one extra mattress available per room for a family. Tell us your children's ages and walking experience before you book, and we will tell you honestly whether the route suits them.

Travel questions

Can a beginner do the Triund trek?

Yes, with reasonable fitness. Expect a steady climb and a long descent on uneven ground, wear proper trekking shoes and keep a gentle pace.

Can the Triund trek be done in one day?

Yes. Fit walkers often go up and down from Galu Devi Temple in a day with an early start. Beginners and families usually enjoy it more split over two days.

Is the Triund trek safe for kids?

Many families walk to Triund. Split the climb, keep a steady pace, agree a turnaround time and take particular care on the descent. Ask us about your children's ages before you book.
