Beyond Triund: Snowline, Laka Glacier & Indrahar Pass
Triund is where most walkers stop, but the trail keeps climbing. What lies above the ridge, how hard each stage is and when to go.
By Himalayan Locals Editorial Team
From the Triund ridge, the Dhauladhars look close enough to touch. They aren't, quite, but a trail does keep climbing towards them: to the Snowline, to the boulder fields of Laka Glacier, to the overhang of Lahesh Cave and finally over Indrahar Pass into Chamba. Each step up is a different kind of trek. Here is what to expect.
The stages above Triund
| Stage | Height · effort |
|---|---|
| Triund ridge | About 2,850 m · the end point for most walkers |
| Snowline | About 3,100 m · roughly 1–2 hours uphill from Triund |
| Laka Glacier | About 3,200 m · just beyond the Snowline, snow and boulders |
| Lahesh Cave | About 3,300–3,500 m · a rock overhang used as a shelter |
| Indrahar Pass | 4,342 m · a steep, demanding final climb; the Kangra–Chamba border |
The easy next step
Above Triund the trail climbs for an hour or two to the Snowline, where a seasonal café marks the edge of the high ground. A short way on, the Laka Glacier area opens up: snowfields early in the season, boulder fields later, and the main wall of the Dhauladhars directly above you. For a fit walker it is a long but manageable addition, and it turns Triund from a viewpoint into a proper mountain day.
The catch is the ground. Boulder fields here are easy to lose your way in, snow can linger into early summer, and the weather turns quickly. It is not a place to wander alone.
A serious trek, not a longer walk
Indrahar Pass, at 4,342 m, is a different undertaking. From Lahesh Cave the final climb is steep, exposed in places and can take anywhere from two to six hours. Most walkers allow at least three days for the round trip from McLeod Ganj, with nights at Triund and near Lahesh, and many continue over the pass into Chamba. The season usually runs from late spring to autumn; outside it, snow closes the route.
- Start each climbing day early: afternoon storms are common in the Dhauladhars.
- Expect boulder fields, loose rock and, in places, real exposure on the final ascent.
- Altitude matters above 3,500 m. Go slowly, drink water and turn back if you feel unwell.
- Go with a guide who knows the route. Losing the trail in the boulder fields is the most common mistake.
